Football Fans Association Calls for Ticketing Transparency
Football fans across Kenya are demanding clarity in ticketing processes ahead of the upcoming match against Zambia this Sunday. The Kenya Fans Association (KFA) is urging both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to address the recent ticketing controversy, where tickets for the CHAN 2024 matches reportedly sold out before their official release.
Addressing the Ticketing Controversy
Shem Okattah, the chairman of the KFA, emphasized that the lack of ticketing transparency has led to security vulnerabilities in stadiums, resulting in penalties for Kenya. “Fans are the lifeblood of the game. They deserve a transparent process, fair access to tickets, and clear communication on availability,” he stated.
This plea comes after CAF imposed strict measures for upcoming matches at the Kasarani Stadium due to previous security lapses. The new directive mandates that only 60% of the stadium’s capacity—around 27,000 tickets—be made available, and entry will strictly be limited to electronic ticket holders.
Improving Matchday Experience
Okattah highlighted the urgent need for the FKF and event planners to adopt crowd management strategies. “We have observed serious operational failures, including slow ticket verification and insufficient entry points, leading to dangerous congestion,” he said. The KFA plans to work with the Nairobi County Government to establish official fan zones, aimed at reducing crowding around the stadium.
“We aim to enhance the matchday experience with trained volunteers who will assist stadium officials and provide insights to CAF, FKF, and local organizers,” Okattah added.
Presidential Incentives Boost Team Morale
In a related development, President William Ruto has announced incentives for the Harambee Stars, promising each player Sh2.5 million should they win against Zambia. Additional bonuses are available for making it to the quarter-finals, including up to Sh1 million and two-bedroom affordable housing units. The team has already earned financial rewards after various matches in the tournament, including significant victories against Morocco.
As co-hosts of CHAN 2024 with Uganda and Tanzania, Kenya has a unique opportunity to showcase its football passion and elevate the sport’s profile. The call for transparency in ticketing is not just a plea; it’s a necessary strategy to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all fans.
Next steps include immediate action to improve ticketing processes and ongoing communication with fans to rebuild trust as Kenya moves forward in the tournament.
