President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau (MON), took center stage on Monday evening at the Night of Tributes for sports icons, where he celebrated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering support for Nigeria’s athletes. “Mr. President has taken the bull by the horn to abolish the era when the nation’s sports heroes laboured in vain,” Gusau stated, highlighting Tinubu’s commitment to rewarding their hard work.
A Night to Remember
The event, organized by Air Peace airline and former Nigerian captain Olusegun Odegbami, honored sports legends like Christian Chukwu, Peter Rufai, Charles Bassey, Moses Effiong, and boxing champion Obisia Nwakpa, all of whom recently passed away. Gusau pointed out that with the recent victories of the Super Eagles and Super Falcons, President Tinubu is reshaping the narrative around sports recognition in Nigeria.
A Call for Recognition
“People talk about the neglect of our sporting heroes, but we can see that President Tinubu is changing the narrative,” Gusau affirmed. His praise extended to Allen Onyema, Chief Olusegun Odegbami, and the Director General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Professor Eghosa Osaghae, for their roles in making the Night of Tributes a reality.
Honoring the Contributions
In closing, Gusau remarked, “These legends did Nigeria proud in their different lifetimes. They were warriors. We will never forget their amazing contributions to Nigeria football.” The Night of Tributes was a heartfelt reminder of the importance of acknowledging those who have inspired generations.
This tribute not only honored the departed legends but also reiterates the need for continued support and recognition of Nigeria’s diverse and talented sports community. What are your thoughts on this initiative? Share your comments below!
