FCT Football Tournament Starts August 18

NUJ FCT Football Tournament Kicks Off August 18

The third edition of the NUJ FCT Football Tournament is set to commence on August 18, 2025, at the area 3 and area 10 football fields in Abuja. This highly anticipated event showcases a knockout format and brings together twelve competing teams, aiming to foster camaraderie among unions and organizations in Nigeria.

Tournament Structure and Fixtures

The official draw for the tournament revealed two groups: Group A features the Federal High Court (FHC), Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and Nigeria Police Force (NPF). Group B includes the Nigeria Army, AIBEN, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), and Nigeria Air Force (NAF).

As per the schedule, the first match day will take place on August 18, starting with FHC facing NPF at 10 am and concluding with NUJ versus SWAN at 3 pm. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals on August 21, while the third-place play-off and the final are set for August 22 and 23, respectively.

Emphasis on Sportsmanship

Grace Ike, Chairperson of the NUJ FCT Council, highlighted the importance of sportsmanship among players and officials. “Every player and official must engage with a spirit of fairness,” she stated, underscoring the tournament’s goal to strengthen relations between the union and its partners. Jide Oyekunle, NUJ Council Secretary, also urged teams to substantiate any allegations with evidential backing, ensuring transparency throughout the competition.

Chairman of the NUJ FCT Sports Week Organising Committee, Ndubueze Chidoka, expressed gratitude for the sponsors, specifically AIBEN. “This tournament transcends mere enjoyment; it emphasizes friendship and health,” he remarked, encapsulating the event’s broader objectives.
