The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has selected four Moroccan referees to officiate at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which will take place in Morocco from July 5 to 26, 2024. This marks a significant recognition of Moroccan officiating talent, as the host nation will have the largest representation among all participating countries.
The Moroccan officials selected are:
-
Bouchra Karboubi (Central Referee): Karboubi is a highly respected official, having previously refereed at the 2023 Men’s Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire and set to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
-
Sabah Sadir (Central Referee): Another experienced Moroccan referee, Sadir joins Karboubi among the central referees for this prestigious tournament.
-
Fathia Jermoumi (Assistant Referee): Jermoumi brings her expertise as one of the assistant referees.
-
Ihssane Nouajli (Assistant Referee): Nouajli completes the Moroccan quartet, also serving as an assistant referee.
A total of 46 match officials—including 18 central referees, 18 assistant referees, and 10 Video Assistant Referees (VAR)—have been appointed for the tournament, representing 30 different African countries. This is a record number of officials for the Women’s AFCON, surpassing the previous high of 40 at the 2022 edition.
CAF’s selection highlights the growing stature of Moroccan referees on the continental stage, especially as the country prepares to host Africa’s premier women’s football tournament. The presence of these four officials is expected to further boost the profile of Moroccan football and inspire future generations of female referees in the country.
