NFF President Gusau Backs Nigeria Coach Eric Chelle

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president, Ibrahim Gusau, has thrown his weight behind Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, reaffirming the federation’s commitment to the French-born tactician despite ongoing challenges with the national team.

Strong Support for Chelle

Gusau’s declaration serves as a significant vote of confidence for Chelle, who remains unbeaten since taking charge of the Super Eagles. Following the departure of interim manager Austin Eguavoen, Chelle’s dual role includes managing both the Super Eagles and the CHAN Eagles, a strategy designed to maximize player potential.

“We are doing our best to provide Eric Chelle with everything he needs to succeed,” Gusau stated. “His involvement with the CHAN Eagles allows him to assess talent effectively for the main squad, broadening our selection options.”

Collaboration Towards World Cup Dreams

The NFF president emphasized a collaborative approach, reinforcing Chelle’s assurance for qualification in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. “I asked him what he needed to succeed, and he requested that all his assistants join him. Despite the difficult circumstances he faced, he has assured me that we will qualify for the World Cup. We have no intention of making last-minute coaching changes.”

Currently, the Super Eagles sit at 44th in the FIFA World Rankings, making them the fifth-best team in Africa. Their next challenge is a crucial qualifying match against Rwanda on September 1, 2025, at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

Upcoming Challenges

In addition to his responsibilities with the Super Eagles, Chelle will lead the CHAN team at the upcoming 2024 CHAN finals, with their first group stage match against Senegal on August 5 at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar.

In conclusion, Gusau’s support of Chelle not only signals confidence but also a strategic vision for Nigerian football. Fans are optimistic about what the future holds. Please share your thoughts in the comments below!
