Okafor Opts for Nigeria Over Malawi Ahead of Morocco Debut

Chioma Okafor, the promising 21-year-old striker from the University of Connecticut, has chosen to commit her international future to Nigeria’s Super Falcons instead of Malawi’s Scorchers. This decision comes as she prepares for her debut at the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where Nigeria aims to reclaim its continental dominance.

Decision Driven by Opportunity

Born in Malawi to a Nigerian father and Malawian mother, Okafor has a unique dual-nationality background. She had previously trained with Malawi in 2015 and was invited to represent them in February 2025, but academic commitments prevented her from attending. However, the quick and supportive response from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) played a significant role in her decision.

Her mother, Patricia Okafor, emphasized that Chioma made the choice independently: “It was her choice, I told her to choose so that she would not regret it.” The prompt action from the NFF, including official inquiries and the facilitation of her passport application in Atlanta, showcased their commitment to securing emerging talent.

A Bright Future with Nigeria

Now named in Nigeria’s 24-player squad for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, Okafor is expected to shine in her debut. With Nigeria’s opening match against Tunisia set for July 6, she may also participate in a friendly against Ghana.

Okafor’s commitment to Nigeria represents not only a personal milestone but also a strategic gain for the Super Falcons. As they prepare to challenge for supremacy at WAFCON 2025, her fresh attacking skills promise to enhance the team’s dynamism.
