No Nigerian Match Official Chosen for FIFA U‑20 World Cup in Chile

In a surprising turn of events, no Nigerian match officials were selected for the FIFA U‑20 World Cup set to take place in Chile from September 27 to October 19, 2025. This absence highlights ongoing concerns regarding the international standing of Nigerian referees.

Overview of the Selection

In FIFA’s recent announcement, 54 officials were appointed for the upcoming tournament: 18 referees and 36 assistant referees. Notably, none of the selected officials hail from Nigeria, despite the country’s participation alongside other African nations, such as South Africa, Morocco, and Egypt. This exclusion mirrors a similar trend seen in 2023, when Nigerian officials were absent from the officiating roster during the tournament held in Argentina.

Continuous Concerns

The omission of Nigerian referees is concerning, especially as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) recently commended local referees for passing fitness evaluations and adhering to international guidelines. However, these achievements have yet to translate into selection for key tournaments. The increasing incorporation of Football Video Support (FVS) technology in matches emphasizes the necessity for referees to adapt to evolving officiating standards.

The Need for Reform

This persistent exclusion underscores systemic issues, including the lack of VAR technology and modern training protocols within Nigeria’s domestic league. Without the necessary investment in referee development and infrastructure, Nigerian officials will likely continue to be overlooked on the global stage.

It is crucial for the NFF to prioritize training, including international exchanges and advances in officiating technology. Only through substantial reform can Nigeria hope to see its referees represented in prestigious tournaments like the U‑20 World Cup.

Conclusion

The absence of Nigerian referees in international competitions diminishes the country’s reputation in football governance. Without action to improve officiating quality and compliance with international standards, Nigeria risks remaining sidelined. Stakeholders must discuss these pressing issues to enhance the future representation of Nigerian referees on the world stage.
