The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is profoundly saddened by the loss of former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai, who passed away in Lagos on Thursday after a period of illness. Rufai, who excelled as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups, left an indelible mark on Nigerian football.

A Shocking Loss

NFF General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi expressed his disbelief, stating, “This is really, really shocking! Peter Rufai dead? What happened? I am perplexed.” He emphasized that the federation had no knowledge of Rufai’s illness and conveyed heartfelt condolences in a statement issued by Dr. Ademola Olajire, the NFF’s Director of Communication. “We earnestly pray to the Almighty God to grant him eternal rest, and to comfort all his loved ones as well as the entire Nigeria football family,” Sanusi added.

Super Eagles Pay Tribute

The Super Eagles honored their former teammate and 1994 Africa Cup of Nations champion with a heartfelt tribute via social media platform X. Recognizing Rufai as a “towering figure in Nigerian football history,” the national team stated, “Forever in our hearts, Dodo Mayana. Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai.”

A Career to Remember

Rufai made 65 appearances for the Super Eagles, featuring in two World Cups and winning the AFCON title in 1994. His professional career spanned several countries, including Belgium, Portugal, and Spain, showcasing his talent with clubs like Stationery Stores, where he reached the Africa Cup Winners Cup final in 1981. Beyond the pitch, Rufai dedicated his post-retirement years to mentoring young talents, further enriching Nigerian football.
