Nigeria’s Women’s Team Clinches African Title Despite Neglect and Mismanagement

Nigeria’s women’s football team, the Super Falcons, triumphantly secured their record 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, overcoming significant obstacles and lack of support from authorities. President Bola Tinubu honored the team after their thrilling 3-2 victory over host Morocco, highlighting the players’ extraordinary resilience amid administrative neglect.

Victory Amid Adversity

The Super Falcons’ success resonates deeply within a country where football is a cherished pastime. Yet, analysts express concerns about the persistent mismanagement that has plagued the women’s team for years. “They have managed to dominate even though the Nigerian soccer authorities do not put as much funding, care, attention, and planning into the way the women’s national team is run,” stated Lagos-based sports analyst Solace Chukwu in an interview with The Associated Press.

Unequal Treatment

The team’s challenges include unpaid match bonuses, leading to a training boycott in 2022. Although the players advanced in the tournament, the backlog of payments was only addressed by the president just before the final. Insufficient training resources further hindered their preparations, as they lacked proper kits and competitive friendly matches.

Challenges in Women’s Sports

These issues are not unique to the Super Falcons; they reflect broader systemic problems in Nigerian sports, often exacerbated by societal biases against women athletes. African sports analyst Oluwashina Okeleji remarked, “The argument from the federation is that the men bring in more money, but the truth is the women bring most prestige and titles to Nigeria.”

Looking Ahead

While President Tinubu has promised rewards for the players, skepticism remains among fans regarding the potential for long-term improvements in women’s football. Supporter Funmi Obasa from Abuja commented, “What they need is investment in facilities, staff, and consistent payments.”
