Tinubu Gives Super Falcons Highest Reward in 27 Years

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred the highest cash prize in 27 years to the Super Falcons following their historic 10th Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title. The team achieved this remarkable feat on Saturday, defeating the hosts, Atlas Lionesses of Morocco, 3-2 in the finals held in Rabat.

A Historic Celebration

During a reception at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Tinubu honored all 24 players and 11 technical staff members with the National Honour of Officer of the Niger (OON). Additionally, he directed that each player and technical crew member be allocated a three-bedroom apartment within the federal government’s Renewed Hope Estate in Abuja.

The President announced a substantial cash award of $100,000 (N150 million) for each player and $50,000 (N75 million) for each member of the technical staff. “You have inspired millions, especially young girls, showing them that their dreams are attainable,” Tinubu stated, emphasizing the significance of the team’s work in uniting Nigeria during challenging times.

Mixed Reactions to the Generosity

The president’s move has sparked varied reactions across the country. While many commend the initiative as unprecedented, others question the decision to allocate such large sums amid pressing economic challenges, including an inability of some states to meet minimum wage requirements.

In response to the reactions, former National Sports Commission Director-General Mallam Alhassan Yakmut praised the historic reward, urging that recognition of athletes should extend down to grassroots levels. The gesture is seen as a powerful motivator, not just for the Super Falcons but for athletes across Nigeria.

The unity and spirit fostered by the Super Falcons serve as an inspiring reminder of the potential within every Nigerian.
