Women’s AFCON: Super Falcons Receive National Awards, Cash After Completing ‘Mission X’

Nigeria’s remarkable Super Falcons have been honored with national awards, cash prizes, and housing by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu after triumphing in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, famously completing their ‘Mission X.’ This victory marks the team’s record-extending 10th African title.

Celebrating a Historic Win

The Super Falcons staged a thrilling comeback, defeating Morocco 3-2 in the final held in Rabat. The exhilaration of their victory was felt throughout the country, culminating in a grand reception in Abuja, where President Tinubu bestowed the players with the prestigious Officer of the Order of the Niger award, along with a three-bedroom apartment and cash awards worth $100,000 in naira for each of the 24 players.

The coaching staff didn’t miss out either, receiving similar honors and a cash reward of $50,000 in naira.

A National Recognition

The Order of the Niger is Nigeria’s second-highest national honor, recognizing outstanding contributions to the nation. This occasion follows the honor bestowed upon the Super Eagles last year for their performance in the Men’s Africa Cup of Nations, showcasing the government’s commitment to promoting sports in Nigeria.

Ibrahim Musa Gusau, president of the Nigeria Football Federation, emphasized the positive influence of these awards, stating that they inspire young Nigerian girls to pursue excellence through sports and other noble professions. “Football unites Nigerians from diverse backgrounds, and such recognition will encourage the girl-child to believe in her potential,” Gusau proclaimed.

Additional Support from Nigerian Governors

The celebrations didn’t end with the President’s announcements. The Nigerian Governors’ Forum pledged a donation of 10 million naira ($6,540) to every Falcon player and member of the technical crew. Moreover, six players from the Super Eagles collectively donated 1 million naira to each of the Super Falcons players, further fostering a spirit of camaraderie and support within Nigerian football.

Conclusion

The Super Falcons’ achievements and the subsequent national accolades illustrate the growing recognition of women’s football in Nigeria. With continued support and encouragement, the future for female athletes in the country looks exceptionally bright. Fans and supporters are encouraged to celebrate this monumental victory and share their thoughts in the comments below.
