Super Falcons’ Triumphant Return

ABUJA: The Nigerian women’s national football team, the Super Falcons, returned to Abuja on Monday for an audience with President Bola Tinubu, celebrating their remarkable victory at the Africa Cup championship over Morocco. Upon landing, the players were met with an exuberant welcome at the international airport featuring traditional dancers, drummers, and an eager crowd of journalists and government officials.

A Historic Comeback

The Super Falcons showcased their resilience by mounting an impressive comeback from a 2-0 deficit to clinch a 3-2 victory against Morocco in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final. This triumph marked their 10th WAFCON title, solidifying their dominance on the continent. Tinubu had previously approved tournament bonuses for the players, addressing longstanding issues of payment disparities and frustrations with the Nigeria Football Federation.

Promised Rewards Honored

During their meeting at the presidential villa, Tinubu announced a significant reward for the players: each would receive a three-bedroom apartment and a $100,000 cash bonus. “We could not be prouder,” said Tinubu, who admitted to feeling stressed during the match. This gesture of acknowledgment contrasts with previous struggles regarding unpaid bonuses, particularly after their 2023 Women’s World Cup run.

A Moment of Unity

For many Nigerians, the Super Falcons’ victory brought a much-needed respite from ongoing national challenges. “All our problems were drowned in the frenzy of celebration,” expressed Muhammad Awwal, a taxi driver in Kano. While the euphoric celebration was felt across the country, the welcoming crowd at the airport primarily consisted of airport workers, journalists, and government officials.
