Ex-Harambee Stars Keeper Criticizes Kenya’s Disrespect for Legends

Former Harambee Stars Goalkeeper Calls Out Kenya’s Disrespect for Its Football Legends

Former Harambee Stars goalkeeper Mathews Ottamax is demanding a significant shift in how Kenya honors its football legends ahead of the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024). His appeal emphasizes the need for genuine recognition and meaningful involvement of past players during the tournament scheduled for August 2 to 30, urging organizers to acknowledge those who paved the way for Kenyan football.

Ensuring Dignity for Legends

Ottamax, who played for AFC Leopards, insists that the treatment of football icons in Kenya is far from satisfactory. As the tournament approaches, he notes that it is crucial for former players to be respected and actively involved, as they possess invaluable insights that can enrich the competitive atmosphere.

“Legends shouldn’t merely be spectators; they deserve to analyze and contribute,” he stated during a recent interview. This perspective comes in light of shocking instances, such as Musa Otieno, the nation’s most capped player, having to watch games in the crowded sections of stadiums rather than enjoying the experience in a dignified setting.

Advocating for Meaningful Involvement

According to Ottamax, the CHAN 2024 tournament is a golden opportunity to rectify past oversights. He observed that many former players are relegated to roles far beneath what they merit, often surrounded by unengaged individuals more interested in mingling with politicians than in the sport itself.

“Ex-footballers carry a wealth of experience and should be consulted, particularly in their capacity as coaches. Their knowledge can significantly benefit the current squad,” he noted, encapsulating the essence of giving legends their due respect.

A Call to Action

Ottamax’s impassioned appeal not only underscores the necessity for Kenya’s sports authorities to rethink their approach but also serves as a reminder that honoring football legends is not merely about acknowledgment—it’s about integrating them meaningfully into the sporting culture.

As we approach CHAN 2024, it is time for sports leaders to restore the dignity of those who once ignited national pride on the football field. Embracing this change can serve as a powerful reminder of the legacy those legends have left and continue to impact today’s game.

It’s time to act. Let’s support Mathews Ottamax’s vision for a future where Kenya’s football heroes receive the respect and recognition they rightly deserve.
