In a definitive move for Kenyan football, President William Ruto is urging the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to enhance the performance and standing of the Harambee Stars as the nation prepares to co-host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) with Uganda and Tanzania. This call to action comes in the wake of crucial international fixtures and ambitious infrastructural developments aimed at raising the profile of Kenyan football.

Elevating Football Standards

President Ruto at State House emphasized the need for the FKF, led by Hussein Mohammed and McDonald Mariga, to take bold steps to lift Kenyan football to the heights of the country’s renowned athletics legacy. “You have the heavy responsibility to lift football in our country to the level of athletics,” he stated. This challenge aims to spark a transformation that resonates with the talent already present among players who’ve excelled in top global leagues.

Infrastructure Development for Success

The government is also focusing on critical stadia renovations as part of the preparations for CHAN and the upcoming 2027 AFCON. With Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums undergoing significant upgrades, President Ruto envisions these venues hosting key matches, ensuring they meet international standards. The Kasarani Stadium renovations are nearing completion and are set to host test matches as early as June.

These infrastructural investments not only support the immediate needs of football but underscore a long-term commitment to elevating Kenya’s sporting prowess.

Focus on Future Competitions

As the Harambee Stars gear up under the guidance of South African coach Benni McCarthy, the immediate goal is to navigate the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers. Following a notable 3-3 comeback against Gambia, McCarthy’s leadership has revitalized the team, but the focus is shifting to the August continental showdown at CHAN.

In conclusion, the synergy of government support and strategic leadership from FKF presents a unique opportunity for Kenyan football. Stakeholders now have a clear call to action: elevate local football to new heights, ensuring that the Harambee Stars not only compete but excel on the continental stage. The coming months will be crucial as they set the foundation for a promising future for Kenyan football.
