Debutants Bajaber and Lenkupae Steal the Show as Kenya Draw with Gambia

In a thrilling encounter on Thursday night, debutants Mohammed Bajaber and William Lenkupae played pivotal roles as Kenya drew 3-3 with Gambia in the CAF World Cup Qualifiers. Kenyan Dominance in the First Half

The Harambee Stars began the match assertively, testing Gambia’s defense early on. In the 5th minute, Richard Odada had an opportunity to score but missed narrowly. Captain Michael Olunga also came close just minutes later, but some swift defending kept the game level. Despite maintaining possession, Kenya faced a setback when goalkeeper Ian Otieno misjudged a clearance, leading to a Gambia penalty, which he successfully saved to keep the score at zero.

Tactical Adjustments Pay Off

After halftime, Gambia struck first with a goal from Musa Barrow, followed quickly by a second from Yankuba Minteh, putting Kenya down 2-0. Coach Benny McCarthy’s substitutes, including Lenkupae, energized Kenya’s attack. A penalty awarded to Kenya saw Olunga convert, bringing the score to 2-1. Bajaber then scored to equalize, showcasing the promising talent of the debutants.

Last-Minute Heroics Secure a Point

Gambia regained the lead through Barrow’s second goal, making it 3-2. However, the game took a thrilling turn when Lenkupae found the net deep into injury time, securing a hard-fought draw for the Harambee Stars. This spirited performance highlights the team’s potential as they prepare for their upcoming match against Gabon.

In summary, the draw against Gambia not only showcases the raw talent within the Kenyan squad but also sets the stage for an exciting homecoming match. Fans are encouraged to fill the stands this Sunday to support the Harambee Stars as they build on this momentum.
