Harambee Stars to Host March World Cup Qualifier Against Gabon at Nyayo Stadium

Kenyan football fans eagerly await the Harambee Stars’ return to home soil as they prepare to host a significant World Cup qualifier against Gabon at Nyayo National Stadium on March 24. This match is the team’s first home clash at Nyayo since November 2021, marking a pivotal moment in Kenya’s journey towards international football prominence.

Confirmed Venue for the Qualifier

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced that the March match will take place at the iconic Nyayo National Stadium. This decision represents a crucial opportunity for Kenya as it gears up for upcoming continental tournaments, including the postponed 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, Samson Adamu, expressed satisfaction following his recent inspection of Kenyan facilities. “A lot of people were excited about the CHAN draw organized in Nairobi,” he noted. The confirmation of the Nyayo Stadium serves as a strategic test event for these tournaments, showcasing Kenya’s readiness to host significant football events.

Boost in Morale and Performance

The Harambee Stars have faced challenges, having to play recent home matches abroad due to unavailability of local venues. Their 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Burundi and Côte d’Ivoire were held in Malawi, while 2025 AFCON qualifiers occurred in Uganda and South Africa. The return to Nyayo is expected to invigorate both players and fans, as they seek to improve their current standing in Group F, where they sit fourth with five points.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed, who also serves as Vice Chairman of Kenya’s Local Organizing Committee for CHAN and AFCON, confirmed plans for additional test matches at Nyayo and Kasarani. “The return to Nyayo is significant for our national pride and morale,” he stated.

As the top team from each of the nine groups qualifies directly for the World Cup, and the four best runners-up advance to intercontinental playoffs, the stakes are high for the Harambee Stars against Gabon.

Looking Ahead

With the much-anticipated match just around the corner, Kenyan football fans are encouraged to rally behind the Harambee Stars. The significant opportunity to secure a victory at home could be a turning point in the team’s qualification journey.

If you’re a football enthusiast or a passionate supporter, mark your calendars for March 24 and prepare for a thrilling showdown at Nyayo Stadium.
