Football Star Ezekiel Otuoma Dies: A Heartbreaking Loss for Kenya’s Soccer Community

Kenya’s football fraternity is mourning the loss of former soccer star Ezekiel Otuoma, who passed away at just 31 years old. His wife, Rachael Otuoma, shared the somber news via her TikTok account, expressing her profound grief in a heartfelt message. “To my husband, you left a hole in my heart that no one else can fill,” she wrote, highlighting the deep love they shared.

Facing Adversity: Otuoma’s Battle with ALS

Ezekiel Otuoma’s journey was marred by a devastating diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in November 2020. This motor neuron disease confined him to a wheelchair and stripped him of his ability to speak. Despite intense treatments in various locations, including India, the battle took a toll on his life. His plea for support resulted in a generous donation of Ksh 2.2 million from betting firm Odibets to help offset his medical expenses.

Remembering a Talent: Otuoma’s Football Legacy

Otuoma enjoyed a prolific football career, playing for well-known clubs like AFC Leopards, Western Stima, Ulinzi Stars, and Talanta FC. Colleagues and former managers described him as a game-changer, with the ability to shift dynamics in an instant. “He was a unique player with a winning mentality,” noted former Western Stima manager Moses Nyalik, underscoring Otuoma’s impact on the sport.

As he is laid to rest, condolences have poured in from various figures, including Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, who emphasized the need for strength and peace for Otuoma’s grieving family.

Ezekiel Otuoma’s passing is not just a loss for his family but for all of Kenya’s football enthusiasts. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of players. Join the conversation: how can we support athletes facing similar adversities?
