Kenya Suspends 16 Footballers, Coaches Over Fixing Allegations | Football News

Immediate Action to Preserve Integrity

On Friday, FKF announced the provisional suspension of 14 players and two coaches. A significant number of those affected belong to Zoo Kericho FC, a team previously expelled from the Kenyan Premier League for match-fixing in 2021. A notable player from reigning champions, Tusker FC, is also implicated. FKF stated, “In an effort to protect the integrity of the league, the federation has suspended these individuals pending investigations by FIFA and the FKF integrity department.”

This decisive action follows a crucial tip-off that highlighted ongoing unethical practices within Kenyan football.

Historical Context and Next Steps

This isn’t the first time Kenya has faced scrutiny over match-fixing; in February 2020, FIFA banned four Kenyan players for their role in an international conspiracy. Following that scandal, five referees were also suspended. In light of this complex backdrop, FKF is urging its members to refrain from engaging with the suspended individuals during the investigation period.

As Kenya reinstates its international standing after previous FIFA sanctions, it must tackle these issues head-on. The federation’s integrity department will be working closely with FIFA to ensure a thorough examination of all claims.

Call to Action

The suspension marks a crucial turning point in Kenyan football’s fight against corruption. Stakeholders must remain vigilant and hold integrity paramount. Fans and players alike are encouraged to report any suspicious activities, ensuring the future of a fair and competitive league. Keep an eye on further updates as the investigation unfolds.
