CAF Sanctions Kenya Again Over Crowd Trouble

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed further sanctions on Kenya due to security breaches during the African Nations Championship (CHAN), highlighting serious concerns regarding crowd management. With this sanction, Kenya’s entry to the Moi International Sports Center has been limited to 27,000 fans for the upcoming match against Zambia.

Heightened Security Measures Needed

In a statement released on Monday, CAF emphasized that only electronic ticket holders would be permitted entry to the stadium, outlawing the use of thermal tickets. The governing body voiced serious concerns about the integrity of the competition and fan safety, warning that further breaches might lead to Nigeria’s matches being relocated from Kasarani Stadium. The need for immediate implementation of security measures is critical to maintaining the integrity of the tournament, ensuring fan safety, and maintaining confidence in Kenya’s organizational capabilities.

Previous Lapses and Current Challenges

This is not the first time Kenya has faced sanctions. Following the opening match against the DR Congo, where security lapses were evident, Kenya’s football federation was fined nearly $20,000. CAF’s recent sanctions stemmed from significant security inadequacies noted during the match against Morocco on August 10. Major lapses included unauthorized access by ticketless spectators, chaos at exit points, and ineffective police presence amid violent incidents involving live ammunition and tear gas.

The report criticized inadequate communication tools and the absence of CCTV coverage at crucial entry points, raising alarms about the overall security setup.

Next Steps for Organizers

To mitigate these issues, organizers should prioritize strengthening security protocols and communication methods. Key actionable steps include:

  2. Increasing Security Personnel: Deploy more trained security staff to manage crowd control effectively.
  3. Improving Communication Framework: Establish reliable communication channels among security staff to report and respond to incidents swiftly.
  4. Upgrading Surveillance Systems: Install CCTV systems at critical points to monitor crowd movements.

As Kenya prepares for its match against Zambia, immediate action is vital to restore confidence in event management and ensure safety for all attendees. Failure to act could not only jeopardize current matches but also future hosting capabilities.

The road ahead mandates diligence and proactive measures to secure Kenya’s reputation in international football. The time to act is now.
