His breakthrough moment occurred later that year during the East and Central Africa Championship (Cecafa Cup) held in Mombasa. His progress continued with opportunities at the World Athletics Championships in Athens (1997) and the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.

Currently, Bernard Otieno is expanding his horizons through academia. He is pursuing a PhD in Communication and Media Studies at the University of Nairobi, bolstering his already impressive qualifications. He holds a Master’s Degree from the same university and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication and Media Studies from Daystar University.
