Technical Committee Formed to Unlock Private Sector Investment in Sports

President William Ruto has taken a significant step in transforming the landscape of sports investment in Kenya by forming a technical committee comprising government representatives, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), and private sector leaders. This initiative aims to streamline sponsorships, improve governance, and attract private sector investment to revitalize Kenyan sports.

During the launch on September 3, 2025, at State House Nairobi, President Ruto emphasized Kenya’s potential to become a global sporting powerhouse. “We are ensuring every gifted Kenyan has the opportunity to shine,” he stated, calling for collaborative efforts to nurture talent from the grassroots.

Addressing Challenges in Sports Governance

The committee is set to tackle longstanding issues that have hindered private sector involvement in sports, such as weak governance and lack of accountability. “We must create a framework for effective private sector participation so that sponsors can invest confidently,” indicated President Ruto. Acknowledging previous failures, including FKF’s 2022 suspension from international football, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring transparency and that funds will solely support sports development.

Infrastructure Investment and Future Outlook

To complement private sector efforts, the government will invest in vital infrastructure such as modern stadiums and grassroots academies. With a bid for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) already in place, these initiatives are designed to provide local talent the exposure necessary for success on the world stage.

Deputy President Prof Kithure Kindiki remarked that with the right leadership and accountability, the future of sports in Kenya is bright. To transform this potential into reality, stakeholders must collaborate effectively.
