Ex-Chiefs Target ‘On Track’ For National Team Record

Kenya striker Michael Olunga, a former target for Kaizer Chiefs, is inching closer to securing the Kenyan national team record for goals. Following his recent standout performance in a FIFA World Cup qualifier, Olunga has now netted a remarkable 34 goals for his country, placing him just one goal shy of the all-time record.

Olunga Shines in Recent Match

In a dominant display, Olunga propelled the Harambee Stars to a resounding 5-0 victory over Seychelles. Though Kenya faced elimination from World Cup contention after their 3-1 defeat to The Gambia, Olunga’s prolific scoring helped restore confidence in the squad. He scored the fourth goal via penalty and capped off the rout with a towering header from a corner kick.

With these two crucial goals, Olunga has now surpassed Elijah Lidonde’s tally of 33 goals and matched Dennis Oliech’s record of 34. This surge places the 32-year-old striker on the brink of breaking the all-time scoring record held by William Ouma, who boasts 35 goals.

Looking Ahead: Final Challenges

As the national team prepares to face Burundi and Ivory Coast in their remaining qualifiers next month, all eyes will be on Olunga. His current form puts him in a prime position to not only surpass Ouma but also inspire his teammates in crucial matches ahead.

For fans and analysts alike, the upcoming fixtures are pivotal; a record-breaking goal from Olunga could reignite Kenya’s aspirations on the international stage.
