Kenya Legend: Why I Was Against Benni’s Appointment

A Kenyan football legend has expressed his concerns about Benni McCarthy’s appointment as the head coach of the Harambee Stars, emphasizing the need for local talent in coaching roles.

McCarthy’s Impact on the National Team

Benni McCarthy, the Bafana Bafana icon, joined the Harambee Stars in March after parting ways with Manchester United. Under his leadership for four months, the team’s performance has been a mixed bag, suffering a loss against Gabon and managing a draw with Gambia during the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

Francis Baraza, a former Harambee Stars defender, openly criticized McCarthy’s appointment, advocating for a local coach instead. “I was against the appointment from the start,” Baraza stated in an interview with Pulse Sports. “We need someone who understands our local dynamics.”

Advocating for Local Coaches

Baraza’s preference for a local coach stems from a desire to break free from entrenched selection practices. “Local coaches know the players and the culture,” he argued. “They can revolutionize the team beyond ‘friendships’ in selection. We must trust Kenyans with these roles.”

While he initially opposed McCarthy’s hiring, Baraza emphasized the importance of supporting the current coach. “Now that he is in charge, let’s give him time,” he indicated, expressing hope for improved results with increased backing.

Next Steps for the Team

As the Harambee Stars prepare for future matches, support for McCarthy becomes crucial. Football stakeholders should engage with local coaches, integrating their insight and experience into the national team’s strategy. Advocating for homegrown talent can yield innovative approaches in player selection and training.

In conclusion, the debate around Benni McCarthy’s appointment highlights the importance of local representation in football leadership. As Kenya navigates its road to the World Cup, the call for unity and strategic support remains essential. Engaging in discussions about local coaches can clarify the path forward for the Harambee Stars. Let’s champion our homegrown talent and nurture future success.
