Kenya’s Football Grannies to Feature in Beka Tournament in South Africa

In an inspiring development, Kenya’s Football Grannies, a rapidly rising team dedicated to female empowerment, will participate in their first international tournament in South Africa from April 2-5, 2025. Funded by the Ministry of Sports, this initiative champions active living for elderly women, showcasing that age is no barrier to athletic passion.

Breaking Barriers Through Sports

The Football Grannies, based in Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet counties, have garnered national attention since their inception last year. Comprising women aged 52 to 75, the team is not just about football; they are redefining societal perceptions of age through their commitment and skill. The Principal Secretary for Sports, Peter Tum, highlighted their transformative role during an exhibition match at Mutei Primary School, emphasizing the government’s full support for their upcoming tournament in South Africa.

“We aim to demonstrate that true champions are measured not by age but by heart,” Tum stated while handing over the team’s registration certificate and kits. His comments reflect the ongoing government agenda prioritizing sports as a catalyst for social transformation.

Community Impact and Recognition

The team’s patron, Elizabeth Keitany, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the Ministry’s backing, including official recognition and training resources. “Going to South Africa is a dream come true for players who never imagined representing Kenya abroad,” she said. Her sentiment echoes the team’s evolving narrative—previous doubts are now turning into dreams realized.

With a delegation of 22 players and eight officials, the Football Grannies are set to compete in a tournament featuring 32 teams from countries such as the USA, France, and Ghana, organized by the Beka Ntsanwisi Foundation.

Next Steps for Participation

The upcoming tournament offers more than just competition; it’s a platform for advocacy and inspiration. As team captain Gertrude Kipyegon remarked, “We see the light. It’s slowly sinking in that we are heading for greater heights.”

To build on this momentum, stakeholders must continue to support initiatives like the Football Grannies. Engaging communities and fostering sports participation among women of all ages are crucial steps toward creating a more inclusive sports culture in Kenya.
