Kenya’s Harambee Starlets executed a strategic comeback, defeating The Gambia 3-1 in the first leg of their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualification match at Nyayo National Stadium. Despite an early setback, the team showcased resilience and tactical prowess that could pave the way for their return to continental football after a nine-year hiatus.

Dominating the Match Strategy

The early goal from Gambia’s Fatoumata Kante in the 3rd minute startled the Starlets. However, the team quickly regained their composure, responding with a series of coordinated attacks. Goals from Mwanahalima Adam, Fasila Adhiambo, and Shirleen Opisa not only turned the tide but created a vital two-goal cushion for the return leg. Effective positioning and quick ball movement were key strategies that kept Kenya in control as they pressed forward.

Tactical Resilience Builds Momentum

The second half saw both teams fighting fiercely for dominance, but the Starlets maintained their advantage through disciplined defense and strategic substitutions. Their ability to adapt and manage the pace of the game prevented Gambia from creating multiple scoring opportunities. With their victory, the Starlets set the stage for a critical match in Thiès, Senegal on Tuesday, October 28, where they require either a draw or win to secure their place in the upcoming tournament.

Kenya is poised to mark its return to top-tier African football, aiming to compete in the 2026 WAFCON hosted in Morocco. The Starlets need focused preparation and a disciplined approach to capitalize on this momentum.
