East African national teams and clubs are stepping onto the continental stage with newfound confidence, as demonstrated by their impressive performances in the ongoing Pamoja 2024 CHAN. The CAF Technical Study Group (TSG) has affirmed that East Africa can now compete with the rest of the continent, marking a pivotal opportunity for the region.

Historic Quarterfinals for East Africa

For years, East African teams struggled in major tournaments, often failing to make a significant impact. However, during the current Pamoja 2024 hosted in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, all three co-hosts reached the quarterfinals, a historic achievement that reflects a commitment to improvement and development in local leagues. “The East African teams have shown that they have the belief, and this has pushed them to work harder,” said TSG member Oscar Mirambo. This confirmation that the region can compete at high levels offers actionable strategies for future tournaments, particularly looking forward to AFCON 2027.

Tactical and Technical Growth

The TSG emphasized the noticeable tactical evolution among East African teams. Coaches are implementing innovative strategies, while a focus on youth inclusivity is yielding fresh talent well-versed in modern football techniques. Mark Fish, a South African football legend, highlighted the importance of including young players who have previously participated in U17 and U20 AFCON tournaments. “The CHAN will now offer them a platform to boost this further,” Fish noted. By integrating youth and leveraging local strengths, East African football can build a sustainable ecosystem for future success.

Setting the Stage for Future Success

The current momentum from Pamoja 2024 is not just about advancement; it’s about redefining perceptions of East African football. With the TSG committed to offering technical advice across the continent, the established pathways for enhanced performance are clear. Michael Amenga remarked, “CHAN gives us a huge boost in terms of exposing our players to this kind of competitive level.” To capitalize on this progress, local federations must implement strategies that prioritize player development.
