East African Hosts Line Up Mini-Tournament Ahead of TotalEnergies CHAN 2024

As excitement mounts for the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN), East African co-hosts Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania are strategically preparing for the competition by organizing a crucial four-nation mini-tournament in Arusha, Tanzania. Scheduled from July 21 to July 27, this event offers these countries an opportunity to refine their gameplay before the official kickoff on August 2 in Dar es Salaam.

A Tactical Approach to Preparation

The mini-tournament will feature not only the three host nations but also Congo Brazzaville, who will compete in CHAN 2024. Organized by the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA), the event is designed to provide a platform for teams to assess their strategies and gauge team cohesion. “The primary objective of this competition is to offer our Zonal teams a valuable platform to prepare adequately ahead of CHAN,” stated CECAFA Executive Director Auka John Gecheo.

The tournament adopts a round-robin format, ensuring each team plays three matches. The team accumulating the most points at the end will be declared the winner, providing a competitive backdrop to test capabilities and adjust game plans accordingly.

Key Matches and Insights

On Matchday 1, set for July 21, viewers can expect an exciting opener as Kenya’s Harambee Stars face the Uganda Cranes, while Tanzania takes on Congo Brazzaville. Following this, Uganda will match up against Congo on July 24, and Tanzania will face Kenya.

Kenya’s head coach Benni McCarthy has expressed optimism about this initiative: “It will really be a good opportunity to see the players in a real competitive set-up. This is crucial for building momentum ahead of our opening game against DR Congo.” With Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania drawn into distinct groups for the CHAN tournament, this mini-tournament presents a vital step toward fine-tuning their performances.
