With the countdown to the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) in full swing, Kenya has taken a significant step by handing over the renovated Kasarani Stadium to the Local Organising Committee (LOC). This strategic move marks Kenya’s commitment to not only host the 8th edition of CHAN but also to enhance its status as a premier destination for international sports events.

Refurbishment and Readiness of Kasarani Stadium

The Moi International Sports Centre, commonly known as Kasarani, is set to be the main venue for the tournament, hosting all Group A matches involving Kenya, DR Congo, Morocco, Angola, and Zambia. The stadium has undergone extensive upgrades, including the addition of two adjacent training grounds. Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Salim Mvurya, emphasized this as a “critical milestone” in preparation for the tournament.

“Our facilities are now poised for action, and we are eager to showcase our capabilities to the continent,” Mvurya stated. The final match of the competition will take place at Kasarani, underscoring its central role in this continental event.

Strategic Collaboration and Enhanced Security Measures

Beyond venue preparations, Mvurya assured that security measures at other key locations like Nyayo Stadium are on track. The completion of a new perimeter wall is prioritized to meet the requirements set forth by CAF inspectors.

“We aim to protect our investments in these facilities,” Mvurya said, stressing the importance of community awareness against vandalism of public property.

Additionally, coordination with the Football Kenya Federation will be prioritized for the Harambee Stars. “We will ensure the team receives the best preparations possible,” Mvurya added, ensuring that the trophy remains on home soil.

Conclusion

As East Africa gears up for a historic CHAN tournament from 2 to 30 August, the completion of venue upgrades marks a pivotal moment in hosting international football. Kenyans are encouraged to rally behind their teams and protect public facilities.
