Kenya President Ruto in Surprise Harambee Stars Visit, Wants Focus on CHAN Title

Kenya’s President, Dr. William Ruto, made a surprise visit to the Harambee Stars as they prepare for the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024. He urged the team to aim for the title on home soil, emphasizing national pride and the continent’s attention on Kenya.

Government Support and Historical Significance

During his visit at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani Annex, where the team is in its first week of residential training, President Ruto pledged full government support. “We are delighted as a country to host this tournament. We will be making history for Kenya,” he stated, highlighting the significance of co-hosting CHAN with Uganda and Tanzania.

He addressed the players directly: “You are going to represent more than 50 million Kenyans… Know that the whole country is behind you. Let it be historic—if we are hosting it for the first time, then we must win.” This call to action aims to inspire the team as they face formidable opponents in Group A.

Strategic Preparations Underway

Head coach Benni McCarthy expressed gratitude for the President’s engagement, promising the team’s commitment to perform at the highest level. As preparations intensify, the Harambee Stars will participate in a pre-CHAN tournament in Arusha, Tanzania, which starts on 21 July. They will compete against co-hosts Uganda and Tanzania, along with Congo Brazzaville.

While the team has faced some setbacks—losing strikers Moses Shummah and Emmanuel Osoro to professional contracts in Zambia—McCarthy has adapted. He reintegrated players like midfielder Marvin Nabwire and goalkeeper Byrne Omondi to bolster the squad.
