Kenya’s women’s football team, the Harambee Starlets, has secured their place in the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a decisive 1–0 win in Senegal. This qualification marks a significant comeback for the team, which last participated in the continental tournament in 2016.

Historic Comeback in Women’s Football

Under the direction of coach Beldine Odemba, the Starlets exhibited resilience and determination throughout their qualification campaign. Their aggregate win of 4–1 over The Gambia showcases Kenya’s growing strength in women’s football. The Starlets triumphed with a strong 3–1 victory in the first leg held at Nairobi’s Nyayo Stadium. Goals from Mwanahalima Adam, Fasila Adhiambo, and Shirleen Opisa laid the groundwork for the return leg, demonstrating clear teamwork and strategy.

Strong Defense and Key Players

Kenya’s journey was not without challenges. The team edged past a robust Tunisian side in the previous round, thanks in part to goalkeeper Lilian Awuor, whose brilliant saves during two penalty kicks kept the dream alive. The victory against Senegal, driven by Mwanahalima “Dogo” Adam’s crucial strike, highlights the depth and promise within the squad.

With qualification secured, the Harambee Starlets are not merely participants; they are poised to be contenders in Morocco come 2026. Their current trajectory reflects a revamped strategy focused on team cohesion and tactical excellence.

Moving Forward

As the Harambee Starlets prepare for the upcoming tournament, the focus will certainly be on enhancing their performance and broadening their skill set. Engaging with fans and building a solid support system will also be essential in fostering a culture of success.
