FIFA Lifts Development Funding Restrictions on Football Kenya Federation

This pivotal decision represents a significant opportunity for the growth of grassroots programs and infrastructure—fundamental for the sport’s future in the region.

Unlocking Financial Support for Kenyan Football

The removal of these funding restrictions provides FKF with access to critical financial resources aimed at enhancing football across various levels. As outlined in a letter dated December 15, 2025, this decision follows a positive review by FIFA’s Governance, Audit, and Compliance Committee (GACC), which assessed FKF’s improvements in governance and financial management during a meeting in Paris.

The resumption of standard development funding under FIFA’s Forward Programme signifies that FKF demonstrated a commitment to reforms that ensure better accountability and operational integrity. These improvements align with FIFA’s ongoing efforts to ensure ethical governance in football globally.

Ensuring Continued Oversight and Support

While celebrating this momentous development, FIFA has underscored the importance of oversight; FKF will retain a monthly reporting requirement regarding the use of FIFA Forward funds until the next GACC meeting in March 2026. This mechanism is designed to sustain momentum in FKF’s reform initiatives and to provide necessary technical guidance through FIFA’s Financial Governance Team.

FIFA’s continued support underscores its commitment to the long-term success of football in Kenya, ensuring that FKF is equipped to manage funds responsibly and effectively.

Next Steps for FKF and Kenyan Football

In light of these developments, FKF is encouraged to accelerate its reform strategies and implement actionable plans to maximize the benefits of the funding. Stakeholders in Kenyan football must engage proactively to ensure that these resources translate into tangible improvements at the grassroots level, enhancing player development, infrastructure, and overall competitiveness.

The lifting of restrictions is a crucial milestone, yet it is merely the beginning. FKF, along with its partners, must leverage this opportunity strategically to transform the future of football in Kenya. Engaging the community and fostering partnerships will be essential in this endeavor.

By prioritizing these actionable steps, FKF can pave a sustainable path for the growth of football in Kenya.
