Shober reveals discussion over assigning Mohamed Salah to lead Egypt national team

Media figure Ahmed Shober, on his programme “Al-Nazer” on Al-Nahar channel, circulated information about a discussion within the football association regarding assigning Mohamed Salah, captain of the Egypt national team and star of Turkish club Trabzonspor, the task of technical management of the Pharaohs in the next two matches while continuing as a player. This comes at a time when attention is turning to the fate of the technical staff led by Hossam Hassan ahead of the two Malawi matches.

What Shober said about the idea

Shober explained that he had contacted several parties within the football association and that he had heard talk about the possibility of assigning Salah a technical role. He said: “I heard completely new talk that Mohamed Salah, the national team star, could be assigned technically to manage the national team while being a player in the next two matches, and the response was silence.” He added that he does not believe Salah would agree to the idea and that he personally does not favour it, noting that previous experiments of a player taking charge of coaching had not succeeded.

Context: Hossam Hassan’s fate and the two Malawi matches

In the same context, it was mentioned that football association officials, headed by Hani Abou Rida, had settled on dismissing the twins Hossam and Ibrahim Hassan from coaching the national team, against the backdrop of crises raised recently, according to press reports. According to the same information, the upcoming two Malawi matches will be the last stop for the current technical staff, with a trend towards an official announcement of the decision in the coming hours, after consulting Shawky Gharib.

Egypt are preparing for the two Malawi matches on 13 and 17 November, in the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The first leg will be held at Cairo International Stadium, while the second leg will be hosted at Bingo International Stadium.

What does this mean for the fans?

The idea, if true, puts Salah in a completely different position from his usual role. He is a player in the national team, and his name is being put forward to manage its technical affairs at a sensitive time. But Shober himself doubts the player’s approval and describes similar experiments as failed. Most importantly, no official decision has yet been announced, and what is being circulated so far is media speculation and unconfirmed reports.

Football fans in Egypt are awaiting what the coming hours will bring. Share your opinion with us: is the idea of a player taking on a temporary technical responsibility workable? Follow official channels and approved platforms to keep up with all new developments.
