T. Barry, the Everton forward, was awarded the man of the match prize after leading his team to a 3-1 win over Newcastle United in the fourth round of the English League Cup, with a rating of 8.9, after scoring one goal and assisting another and playing the full match (90 minutes). Everton opened the first half leading 2-0, before adding their third goal in the second half, while Newcastle scored their only goal through D. Burn.
Barry’s match stats
- Rating: 8.9 (highest rating in the match)
- Goals: 1 (Everton’s third goal)
- Assists: 1 (assisted Hayden Hackney’s goal)
- Minutes: 90
The numbers show a direct contribution to two of Everton’s three goals, which explains his top spot in the ratings, clearly ahead of his nearest rivals.
Top-rated players in the match
- T. Barry (Everton) — 8.9
- Jordan Pickford (Everton) — 8.5
- Hayden Hackney (Everton) — 8.2
- J. Willock (Newcastle United) — 7.8
- James Garner (Everton) — 7.7
Everton players’ dominance of the top four places reflects the team’s superiority at home, with the exception of Willock, who was Newcastle’s best-rated player despite the defeat.
What does this performance mean?
This high rating comes at a sensitive time for Everton, who lost two consecutive matches in the Premier League to Arsenal and Chelsea before this encounter. The 3-1 win and this individual performance give the team a morale boost before facing Newcastle again on Monday 2 November.
On the other hand, although Newcastle entered the match on the back of a 2-0 away win over Crystal Palace, the expected goals numbers (1.66 for Everton versus 2.76 for Newcastle) indicate that the visitors created more chances than the scoreline reflects, but Everton’s attacking efficiency and Barry’s decisive presence made the difference.
Omar Barry (24 years old) and the position he occupies in attack make him a key element in Everton’s attacking project this season. A performance like this could raise his stock in upcoming matches, especially with the congested League Cup and league schedule.
