Barcelona are on the verge of completing the signing of João Cancelo, reports Diario SPORT. The Portuguese defender is expected to join the club on a two-year contract within the next few days, strengthening the defensive ranks after the arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi in attack.
Deal Close to Completion
Negotiations with Al Hilal have reached an advanced stage, with the Saudi club prepared to sell the 30-year-old after determining he no longer fits their plans. A salary agreement between Cancelo and Barcelona was already in place by the end of last season, meaning the primary stumbling block—financial terms—is nearing resolution.
The transfer fee is expected to land around €10 million, with Al Hilal keen to recover part of their investment. The club has already moved to replace Cancelo by signing Mohammed Mahzari for approximately €8 million.
Cancelo is currently training independently with Al Hilal’s permission. The Portuguese player’s move was identified as a clear priority by both manager Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco, and completion is now imminent.

Cancelo’s primary role at Barcelona will be competition at right-back, where he is expected to battle Jules Kounde and Eric Garcia for the starting position. His defensive credentials combined with his attacking prowess align perfectly with Flick’s tactical demands.

During his previous spell at Barcelona, Cancelo impressed as a backup option to Alejandro Balde, eventually claiming starts and establishing himself as one of the team’s leading assist providers during the second half of that campaign.
His dual-flank capability provides Flick with tactical flexibility and reduces pressure on the club’s left-back options. That positional adaptability, combined with his proven attacking output, makes Cancelo a natural fit within the manager’s system.
