Inter Milan have initiated contract extension talks with left-back Federico Dimarco as Barcelona continue monitoring the 28-year-old’s situation. The Serie A club moved to secure their defender after links emerged between Dimarco and the Catalan outfit during the summer window.
Inter accelerate Dimarco talks amid Barcelona interest
Barcelona explored a swap deal involving Dimarco and academy product Alejandro Balde during the transfer window, though negotiations stalled. The pursuit did not end there — reports suggest the Blaugrana remain interested in acquiring the Italian international, particularly given his contract expires in 2027 with only an additional optional year attached.
Inter’s sporting director Dario Baccini met Dimarco’s representative, Arturo Canales, in Madrid ahead of a UEFA Champions League fixture to open renewal discussions. The conversation marks the beginning of formal negotiations over a fresh long-term agreement that could extend Dimarco’s stay through 2030.
Dimarco previously expressed frustration at Inter’s inaction during summer. “I expected the club to call me to speak after what I did last year,” he stated in a recent interview, referencing his performances and questioning why the Nerazzurri had not activated the optional extension clause already built into his deal.
Salary increase part of retention strategy
Inter view Dimarco as one of Europe’s premier left-backs and are prepared to improve his compensation package accordingly. He currently earns approximately €4 million annually, a figure the club will likely enhance as part of their revised proposal.
