The Portuguese defender had impressed under Hansi Flick in the closing weeks of last season, prompting both clubs to inch toward a deal—until the gulf between their valuations suddenly widened.
Al-Hilal’s price jump freezes Barcelona’s pursuit
Initial negotiations had edged toward completion at approximately €10 million, with only minor administrative hurdles remaining to clear. That framework has now collapsed. According to Saudi outlet Al Yaum, Al-Hilal have demanded €15 million to release Cancelo, a 50 per cent increase that has caught Barcelona off guard as the window countdown accelerates.
The timing of the hike appears deliberate. Simone Inzaghi omitted Cancelo from Al-Hilal’s league-opening squad this week, citing insufficient physical conditioning despite a week of team training. That snub signals the Saudi club no longer views him as central to their plans—yet paradoxically strengthens their leverage. With Barcelona racing against the clock and reportedly also pursuing Marc Casado, director Deco must now weigh whether to stretch the budget or abandon the operation altogether.
Cancelo’s Instagram campaign versus boardroom stalemate
The 32-year-old has left little doubt about his preference. Cancelo has repeatedly posted images of himself in Barcelona’s kit across social media, most recently on Friday morning, reinforcing a return narrative he has maintained since the season ended. He made 23 appearances for Al-Hilal last term, scoring two goals and supplying three assists before the split emerged as inevitable.
Barcelona granted him squad number 20 for the new campaign, yet that symbolic gesture has proved meaningless without binding contractual certainty. Flick remains keen on the reunion, but the manager’s wishes alone cannot close a €5 million gap that has suddenly opened between the clubs’ positions.
Why Al-Hilal’s leverage window is now or never
The Saudi club’s timing reveals calculated strategy rather than principled negotiation. By excluding Cancelo from competitive action and simultaneously raising their valuation, Al-Hilal have created artificial urgency—Barcelona cannot afford a lengthy standoff with the window closing, while any further delay weakens Cancelo’s market appeal. Al-Hilal have essentially converted their lack of interest into a commercial advantage, knowing Barcelona’s desire to complete a deal before August 30 will force compromise or collapse.
