Alejandro Balde will remain at Barcelona this season after the club’s delayed attempts to offload the 22-year-old left-back failed to materialize before the transfer window closed. Barcelona held conversations with his representatives early in the summer signalling openness to offers, yet serious negotiations did not begin until the final ten days—too late to complete a complicated departure.
Inter and Manchester United reject Barcelona’s options
According to SPORT, Barcelona explored two concrete avenues in the window’s closing stretch. The club proposed a swap deal involving Inter Milan’s Federico Dimarco, but the Italian side rejected the approach. Parallel discussions with Manchester United also yielded no agreement. By that stage, insufficient time remained to construct either transaction from the ground up.
Balde’s own position complicated matters further. The 22-year-old, whose contract extends until 2028, never requested an exit and believed he could convince manager Hansi Flick to award him a more prominent role. Barcelona sought solutions knowing the defender occupied a marginal position in Flick’s system, yet their half-hearted summer pursuit meant no suitable destination emerged before the deadline passed.
Flick’s tactical demands clash with Balde’s current level
The fundamental obstacle lies not in Barcelona’s search efforts but in Flick’s assessment of the player. The German coach harbours no doubts about Balde’s technical ability, but questions whether he consistently meets the intensity, commitment and tactical discipline Flick demands. Pre-season opportunities went to other options, signalling Flick’s preference elsewhere.
The manager’s wider full-back strategy sealed Balde’s fate. Flick prioritises versatility across positions—Xavi Espart fits that profile—and pursued Joao Cancelo aggressively, a move that further diminished Balde’s pathway to regular football. An August meeting between Flick and Balde ended with the coach explicitly recommending the defender seek consistent playing time elsewhere.
