Xavi Espart has become an unexpected cornerstone of Hansi Flick‘s defensive setup at Barcelona, starting both of the club’s opening La Liga fixtures this season. The 19-year-old academy product completed the full 90 minutes against Elche and Athletic Club, establishing himself as a trusted option despite his unfamiliar positioning at left-back.
From midfielder to multi-positional asset
Espart’s emergence is striking precisely because left-back remains relatively new territory for him. Developed originally as a central midfielder within Barcelona’s youth system, he has fluidly transitioned across multiple roles during his progression through the club’s ranks. This season alone, he has already operated on both flanks in defence, featured as an inside forward during pre-season, and even lined up in deeper midfield roles. Against Athletic, he spent the closing stages alongside Rodri in midfield, showcasing the positional flexibility that has caught Flick’s attention.
Flick drew a striking parallel when assessing Espart’s qualities following his debut against Newcastle United last season. “When I watch Xavi play, I really like his confidence on the ball. He reminds me of Philipp Lahm, as he can play as a ‘6’ or a ‘2’. I like seeing him with and without the ball,” the manager explained. Lahm, celebrated for seamlessly adapting between positions while excelling in both possession and defensive phases, represents a useful benchmark for the teenager’s potential development trajectory.
Early evidence justifying Flick’s faith at Athletic Club
Espart’s performance against Athletic Club—his official first-team introduction, wearing Barcelona’s number 12 shirt—offered immediate validation for repeated selection. Defensively, he won possession on four separate occasions and made several crucial interventions. In attacking phases, he contributed further up the pitch by creating a goalscoring opportunity and recording a shot on target himself.
While Flick retains alternative options across the defensive line, including Joao Cancelo and Alejandro Balde, his decision to hand Espart back-to-back starts and full-match minutes signals genuine confidence. Two appearances remain insufficient grounds for sweeping conclusions, particularly with a full season stretching ahead.
